A large proportion of the exteriors contain windows in which many of them cover over half the wall. The transparency of the window breaks the barrier between a room and the environment, effectively allowing the window to be essentially a part of the surroundings. 



As seen in with the computers in the computer laboratory and the staff rooms in the office level, it can be seen that the way elements are grouped can also determine the amount of free space is available. By grouping in lines and against walls, it creates wider pathways which improves the circulation around a room, making the person's experience with it more enjoyable and as tranquil as a natural environment.


Similarly, the arrangement in the lecture theatre also produce functional space. As all the seats are in the back half of the room, the entire front half, which is occupied by one person, is planned openly to have sufficient room for any demonstration when necessary.


The mezzanine level allows the library to carry additional books despite the small area. This level also extends the floor plan to the gallery, showcasing major works by the students. Being such an open space, the gallery can display artworks and sculptures of unique shapes that can direct light in numerous ways.


The purpose of open planning is to improve circulation around areas. The open patio area outside level 2 is sufficiently wide enough accommodate a bridge to link the proposed building to the Squarehouse. This assists with circulation so people can travel between the buildings without the need of leaving one altogether.

Incorporation of textures

 Texture 1 - Linear

This texture has been applied to the top level deck area. It's effect is that while it is a large space, the direction of the textures help guide people easily towards the bridge to cross the road. This is essential as without the bridge to NIDA,  people would be forced to exit the building completely and walk around to the main entrance in order to cross the round thus saving commute time.



Texture 2 - Vibrational

The workshop is an area where heavy machinery are used. These cause many vibrations which can be felt in the workshop. In resemblence to how an open plan draws light into from the natural light surroundings, the walls mimic the vibrations of a machine to limit, drawing them away from people thus maximising their experiences in the workshop.


Texture 3 - Rotational

The second floor contains an open plan. The elevator can be considered as the central element in the level. Each rotating arm in this texture on the floor leads to an element on the floor (library, meeting room, cafe. toilet and open deck areas). Hence light from different angles can meet at a single point. The colour of this texture has been faded which ensures there is no clash with the open circulation of this floor space.

Moving Elements

Moving Element One - Sun Roof

This sun roof is placed above the patio to protect from the harsh UV rays of the sun or the drenching rain.



Moving Element Two - Blinds

This blinds are located in level one space between the lecture theatre and studios. It's purpose is to vary the amount of light on the space.

Draft Plan and Model



I have used the floor plan of the Barcelona Pavillion by Mies van der Rohe as inspiration to my building design. The section of the proposed building resembles this floor plans and the positioning of the bridges also allows the proposed building's floor plan itself to have some similarities to the Barcelona Pavillion floor plan:
